The mission of the Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department is to provide diverse year-round leisure opportunities through the preservation of open space, park settings, recreational facilities and programs for the citizens of Greensboro. The benefits of leisure services are especially designed to meet the physical, mental, cultural and social needs of residents and visitors to our community, while enhancing the overall quality of life in Greensboro.
The Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department maintains many different park settings for individuals and groups to enjoy the outdoors. Neighborhood Parks offer tracts of land closer to homes for children and adults to enjoy. These facilities often include open space, playground equipment, concrete courts and natural areas. The Regional Parks of the Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department are large acreage facilities staffed with professional personnel. Leisure opportunities available within Regional Parks include fishing, camping, swimming, golf, trails, disc golf, dog park, tennis, volleyball and much more. The Watershed Parks offer residents the ability to fish, boat, sail, canoe, kayak, hike and picnic. The Watershed Parks also offer great wildlife education, hunter safety, and other educational classes.
City Arts was founded in 1970 as part of the leisure services provided by the Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department. Classes and showcase opportunities are offered in visual and performing arts for people of all ages. From pottery classes to cultural festivals, from tap dance classes to musical theater performances, and from art camps to orchestras, there is a place for you to Listen, Learn & Perform!
For more than 40 years, the Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department has enjoyed a unique partnership with Greensboro Beautiful Inc., a non-profit volunteer organization whose mission is to conserve and enhance the beauty and ecology of our community through public and private cooperation. This partnership is coordinated through the City Beautiful Division of the Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department. The City Beautiful staff work closely with Greensboro Beautiful's volunteer Board of Directors to accomplish the organization’s mission and goals. In addition, the Landscape Management and Park Maintenance Divisions work with City Beautiful staff to implement and maintain Greensboro's three public gardens and citywide landscaping projects.
The Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department operates 10 recreation centers, conveniently located throughout the community, which provide outstanding programs for people of all ages. From team sports and fitness instruction to classes in the fine arts and community groups to join, our centers have leisure activities for the entire family.
Summer day camps and after school programs offer fun and enrichment for boys and girls, ages 5-12. In addition, meeting rooms are available on a rental basis for family reunions, parties or receptions. We welcome new program ideas and look forward to your participation.
The origins of the Greensboro Farmers' Curb Market date back to 1874, making it one of the oldest markets in North Carolina. On any Saturday morning during the summer, the Market is one of the busiest places in the city. It is a festive and friendly place where shoppers stop and chat with friends and buy fresh fruits and vegetables directly from the farmers who grow them. Customers can also find dairy products, home-baked goods, pork products, beef and chicken, fresh-cut flowers, potted and bedding plants, and hand-crafted items at the Market.
The Market is housed in the old National Guard Armory building across from War Memorial Stadium and is a place where the community comes together -- all ages, classes, cultures and ethnic groups, as well as new and long-time customers. The Market, a weekly tradition for many families and individuals, has second and third generation vendors and customers.
Greensboro Parks & Recreation's youth athletic programs provide fun while teaching sportsmanship and teamwork. Adults can also enjoy a variety of leagues that provide a fun, yet competitive, safe and structured environment.
